Marcia Reed | Artist Statement |
My visual narrative centers around my love for painting nature’s forms. These could be landscapes that include water, trees, clouds, plant life, and gardens. It is the life force in nature that moves me and provides endless material to paint. Nothing in my work is still. I seek, in these organic natural forms, the life vibrations that interpret the subject, rather than simply painting what is before me. The painterly brushwork is crucial to me, as I am after the energy, visual vibration, and the surface tension between the land, water, plant life, and sky.
What excites me is the border between the conventional separation of abstraction and representation. I am drawn to discovering the interchange and dialogue where shapes, fluid lines, and movements interact with one another, potentially evoking an emotional response.
My art is not meant to be profound, nor do I have an agenda. I am not pandering to the latest trends or what is marketable. I create from a space of centeredness, authenticity, and, quite simply, my natural world around me. I paint imagery of the river next to my home, my backyard, the coastal marshes nearby, and the organic forms surrounding me. In doing so, I am celebrating the existence of the present moment—a sense of oneness and wholeness of where I am, taking joy in the painting process.
My visual challenge is to express an emotional connection to that sense of place. I paint to investigate, experiment, and push myself toward the possibilities that answer to my soul.
